LG Fanboy’s Coming Soon? LG the new Apple?
January 8, 2007
With Apple sales going up and up it is clearly time someone followed by their lead and invest more time and money than ever before in making spec’d out gadgets sexy. Apple success has came from a combination of exciting, innovative technology to get geeks peeing in their pants and wrapping it all up in attractive packages to get the mass consumer weak at the knees.
Many companies are obviously sitting up and taking notice, Samsung have their glossy piano black LCD screen’s and their new MP3 player range. Sony have their Vaio’s and their Cybershots but the dark horse has got to be LG. This once 2nd division electronic company is now right up their with the big boys. Products like the Digital Projector (AN110), Chocolate mobile phone range and the LGZ1 laptop to mention a few combine the both of best worlds.
LG in the past few years have been making big waves when it comes to be a front runner in innovative products. I’m not in the mood for listing them but take my word they are breaking down more barriers than anyone else. Combine that with a sexy wrapper and you have a winner. Where they fail to successfully follow Apple, is in advertising this could be argued, however they presents is not as strongly felt as their products deserve. They need to examine how Sony makes the mass consumer feel proud and happy to purchase into the LG brand. LG must get rid of the stigma attached to their brand, and I believe 2007 is the year of LG, will we see the first LG fanboy’s? Lets however pray there is one area they don’t copy the likes of Sony and Apple and that is on retail price.
[update]

Looks now like apple is taking a page out of LG’s book. I think it is clear that design at LG is defenitly taking a step forward.

uhu, some weird grammar!

Apple’s USP is their operating system, LG can make all the shiny sleek laptops they like but as long as they are running Windows they will merely be ‘another PC’. There are a couple of LG flatscreen monitors in this office and frankly they aren’t pretty, they aren’t well built and they don’t work any better than the Dell equivalent. I reckon LG have a long way to go before they are even close to Apple’s product quality.

Apple whole line is top line, right down to the shuffle they are deisgned to the highest of standards. LG on the other hand have more of a range of standards, from entry level to more pro level.

Don’t forget, LG’s first and second generation cell phones were ATROCIOUS. Yes, they do seem to be making great strides in design, but most complaints about earlier models were about build quality. To counter, back then they seemed to be targeting the entry-level consumer (read: cheap phones).
I still think your prediction won’t pan out in the near future. Apple success is not, and has not come from it’s marketing alone. I think there are two main factors: 1. Their absolutely innovative user interfaces, coupled with great software design and implementation. And 2. Steve Jobs’ laser-like BUSINESS STRATEGY focus. This is not marketing. Marketing is simply bragging to the consumer about your product, in a fashion that will influence them to buy. Business strategy is the ability to not only see what products (as well as the right mix of ‘killer features to go in those products) the consumer wants, but to see where one’s competition is going. And to move to ’steal’ one’s competition’s market share with better, competitively priced products. And to also know the exact time to branch out into other markets. Don’t forget, the IPhone and AppleTV weren’t ‘drawn up’ 6 months ago. Steve and Company forecasted these products 2+ years out.
Quite a few see it, but I still think the vast majority of folks will be surprised when they finally see the true reason for the move to the x86 architecture come to fruition. And I don’t believe the major driving force was to cut costs. A player in the decision; definitely.

Hehe, funny how LG’s UI looks EXACTLY like OS X has been since it came out. The actual devices look rather different to me, considering they’re just phones with four, rounded corners and a large screen.

What is the name of that labtop, or is it photoshopped?

Didn’t Apple patent all the sensors and multi-touch screen stuff? If so, LG couldn’t make anything near the iPhone. Also that laptop is ugly, look at the inside. It’s worse than quite a few I’ve seen. The outside is too shiny, and the screen is a bit stupid IMO. That will probably break lol

-tj… All of Apple’s products are shiny, especially the black ones. So I understand you’re saying all of Apple’s products are ugly? Also LG could buy licenses to use the Apple patents if that needed at, there are plenty of other ways to detect if a phone is near an ear, there’s nothing special or clever in that. Apple also has a good track record of OEM’ing devices, that’s usual in this global economy.

SORRY!!! LG is the Manufacturer of Apple’s LCD So most probably the quality is the same & not as crappy as the Dell

Apple’s black laptops are not shiny.

chs - LG makes the display panels for both Apple AND Dell.
erc - i coulnd’t have said it better myself
apple is in a position where they don’t have to catch up to anyone. all other mp3 player and compute mfr’s strive to be apple with their products. take windows vista for example - everything from the 3D aqua-like GUI all the way to the dashboard widgets are branded as “new microsoft vista innovations” that every mac user has had for years.
LG, dell, and samsung will never have “fanboys” like apple does b/c there is simply no reason to.

Yup, LG supplies its S-IPS panels to Apple (i.e. Apple 23-Inch Cinema HD Display), DELL and Philips (It seems like most “high-end” LCD monitors use the LG’s panels thesedays). Meanwhile, Samsung, the world’s biggest LCD manufacturer, supplies its S-PVA panels to EIZO and Sony (to name a few).
